We are attempting to simplify the setup and use of audio in ScienceSim. In world voice is clearly the preferred solution. However, the SecondLife viewer includes a proprietary Vivox voice client that cannot easily be converted to use open source implementations such as Asterisk.

The OpenSimulator server can be patched to store all of the generated statistics packages and packet header information. The region “stat packets” contain the vital statistics of the region while the packet headers contain the type and size of all packets sent by the simulator. This creates an anonymous but valuable mass of data for later analysis.

ExtSim (External Simulator Bridge) is a plugin for OpenSim, which has been developed for the ScienceSim community by 3Di Inc. ScienceSim virtual space is allocated in blocks called plazas. A plaza is a 5×5 region in which an organization may host as many ScienceSim regions as desired. The center of the ScienceSim grid is the Mainland which consists of four plazas around the 10000,10000 coordinate. Only the Physics plaza has been built out at this time.

Each region in your plaza is configured through a region configuration file. These files are typically stored in the “Regions” directory of your OpenSim installation. You can host from 1 to 25 regions in a plaze. Every region needs a unique name, unique identifier, location in the plaza, and network port. In addition, you'll need to identify an avatar to be used as the “Master” or owner of the regions. The Master avatar can perform estate management functions on the region.
